Crawford Speaks Out Against “Deem and Pass”

March 19, 2010 by plethadmin

The latest tatics considered by Nancy Pelosi and her liberal allies in the U.S. House of Representatives represent a “departure from the Constitution,” according to First District Congressional Candidate, Rick Crawford.

On a day where a Fox News poll shows only 35% of Americans favor the health care reform bill, Pelosi is attempting to use a tactic dubbed “deem and pass” to push through the Senate’s health care reform bill, without having members of Congress actually vote on the bill. FoxNews.com reports this plan is being considered because, “…many House Democrats don’t want to cast a vote in favor of the unaltered Senate bill, which they oppose for numerous reasons.”

“This represents a departure from the Constitution,” said First Congressional District Candidate, Rick Crawford, referencing Article I, Section 7 of the Constution that states for a “Bill” to “become a Law,” it “shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate.” Crawford adds, “Pelosi knows that Americans don’t want this convaluted bill passed and she is attempting to bypass what the nation wants and the Constution purely for political reasons.”

“It is exactly why the first votes I cast when I get to Washington, D.C. will be against Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House and to repeal any socialized health care plan,” Crawford added.

Crawford has publically signed The Club For Growth’s “Repeal It!” pledge, a promise stating that, should the socialized health care reform bill pass, the person will fight to repeal it once elected. Over 10,000 citizens have signed to support only candidates that have made this pledge.

“The fact that the liberals in Congress are considering bypassing the Constitution to pass such a huge reform bill should remind every Arkansan in the First District why we must elect a true conservative to put the Washington Democrats in check,” said Crawford.

Prominent Baxter County Elected Official Endorses Crawford

March 17, 2010 by plethadmin

First District Congressional candidate, United States Army veteran, and agri-business owner Rick Crawford announced today the endorsement of another prominent Republican leader in the First Congressional District.

Nelda SpeaksBaxter County Treasurer Nelda Speaks announced her endorsement for Crawford today. Holding the position of treasurer since 1996, Speaks has proven herself to be keenly in tune with Baxter County residents for over a decade. Speaks was the first Republican woman elected to the office of County Treasurer and has since run unopposed during her tenure further exemplifying the respect she has garnered from voters all across Baxter County.

“I believe that Rick Crawford is the right choice for the people of Baxter County and the First District,” said Speaks. “Rick is a strong conservative who wants to reclaim the virtues in our Constitution and start using them again in Washington. Rick is a small business owner, understands the importance of Agriculture, and has served honorably in our nation’s military. I could not be more honored to support his campaign to be the next Congressman of the First Congressional District.”

“Nelda’s endorsement means a lot to me,” commented Crawford. “She is a leader and well-respected elected official in Baxter County who has devoted much of her life to public service. Especially considering the economic turmoil the country is in, having the support of someone with so much expertise in business and administration is very important.”

Nelda is a five (5) generation native of Baxter County and these deep roots are one of the many reasons she has such a concern for Baxter County and the First Congressional District. “Having the privilege of serving the people of Baxter County has been one of my greatest honors and I deeply appreciate the confidence they have given me.”

On top of her elected service, Speaks previously owned and operated a private business, Nelda’s Boutique in Mountain Home. She also was previously district treasurer for Norfork schools, treasurer for the General Federation of Women’s Cameo Club in Mountain Home and was even named woman of the year in 1991-92 by the club.

In addition to these accolades, Speaks has had extensive involvement over the years with a variety of groups, from the Twin Lakes Republican Women to the Arkansas Outdoor Recreation Grants Advisory Board.

Nelda Speaks joins a long list of prominent Arkansas leaders that have endorsed Rick Crawford, including Mike Huckabee, Asa Hutchinson and Ed Bethune.

Rick Crawford Acknowledges, Congratulates “The Hurt Locker” Oscar Win

March 11, 2010 by plethadmin

Rick Crawford, a former Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, congratulates the team behind Oscar winning film The Hurt Locker.

The military veteran of the same field highlighted in the 2010 Academy Award-winning film is seeking to continue his service to the country by running for Congress in Arkansas.

Crawford, a former Army Sergeant, served as an EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) technician years before seeking the U.S. Congressional seat in the First District of Arkansas. He disarmed explosives for the Army both domestically and overseas.

EOD Tech Crawford Wiring Explosives

Sergeant Crawford’s overseas deployment was in Southwest Asia, during the 1980’s Soviet conflict in Afghanistan, long prior to the conflict in Iraq that inspired the Oscar-winning film.
“I’m glad to see the efforts of EOD techs and other soldiers overseas being recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,” said Rick. “While Hollywood takes certain creative freedoms, the movie helps people back at home get an idea of the service and sacrifice involved in ordnance disposal. I congratulate the filmmakers involved with the project on its success.”

First released in 2008 and in the United States in 2009, The Hurt Locker highlights EOD operations following the 2004 invasion of Iraq. The emotional and suspenseful movie demonstrates the level of bravery and courage along with the calm nerves needed to disarm explosives in a war zone. The film won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.

Rick Crawford is a second generation military veteran who’s father served before him in the United States Air Force. After extensive travel at home and abroad, Crawford later settled down in Jonesboro, Arkansas to create his broadcasting business, FarmHouse Media, which provides agriculture news to 45 stations across 5 states and is launching a new all-sports FM talk radio station in the Jonesboro market. He has been endorsed by many notable Arkansans including Governor Mike Huckabee, former Congressman Ed Bethune, and former Congressman Asa Hutchinson.

Rick officially announced his intentions to unseat the seven-term incumbent Democrat Congressman Marion Berry in May, 2009.

Returning to Conservative Principles

March 3, 2010 by Crawford for Congress

There are so many ideas and suggestions that are floating around right now as to what we should do in Washington and for the direction of our country.  I have occasion during the campaign to hear about some of these and while most of them are similar in nature, I have come across one that has resonated with me very deeply.

I am a Constitutional Conservative.  What that means is I apply all the challenges and problems we face in Washington to the Constitution and find the answers within the parameters outlined by our Founding Fathers.  I believe the wisdom found in that incredible document is the guide we need now and from here on forward.

I have signed The Mount Vernon Statement and I would encourage you to do the same.  Below, you can read the full statement and you will also find a link to their website where you can sign to show support for Constitutional Conservatism in the 21st Century:

“We recommit ourselves to the ideas of the American Founding. Through the Constitution, the Founders created an enduring framework of limited government based on the rule of law. They sought to secure national independence, provide for economic opportunity, establish true religious liberty and maintain a flourishing society of republican self-government.

These principles define us as a country and inspire us as a people. They are responsible for a prosperous, just nation unlike any other in the world. They are our highest achievements, serving not only as powerful beacons to all who strive for freedom and seek self-government, but as warnings to tyrants and despots everywhere.

Each one of these founding ideas is presently under sustained attack. In recent decades, America’s principles have been undermined and redefined in our culture, our universities and our politics. The selfevident truths of 1776 have been supplanted by the notion that no such truths exist. The federal government today ignores the limits of the Constitution, which is increasingly dismissed as obsolete and irrelevant.

Some insist that America must change, cast off the old and put on the new. But where would this lead — forward or backward, up or down? Isn’t this idea of change an empty promise or even a dangerous deception?

The change we urgently need, a change consistent with the American ideal, is not movement away from but toward our founding principles. At this important time, we need a restatement of Constitutional conservatism grounded in the priceless principle of ordered liberty articulated in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

The conservatism of the Declaration asserts self-evident truths based on the laws of nature and nature’s God. It defends life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It traces authority to the consent of the governed. It recognizes man’s self-interest but also his capacity for virtue.

The conservatism of the Constitution limits government’s powers but ensures that government performs its proper job effectively. It refines popular will through the filter of representation. It provides checks and balances through the several branches of government and a federal republic.

A Constitutional conservatism unites all conservatives through the natural fusion provided by American principles. It reminds economic conservatives that morality is essential to limited government, social conservatives that unlimited government is a threat to moral self-government, and national security conservatives that energetic but responsible government is the key to America’s safety and leadership role in the world.

A Constitutional conservatism based on first principles provides the framework for a consistent and meaningful policy agenda.

  • It applies the principle of limited government based on the rule of law to every proposal.
  • It honors the central place of individual liberty in American politics and life.
  • It encourages free enterprise, the individual entrepreneur, and economic reforms grounded in market solutions.
  • It supports America’s national interest in advancing freedom and opposing tyranny in the world and prudently considers what we can and should do to that end.
  • It informs conservatism’s firm defense of family, neighborhood, community, and faith.

If we are to succeed in the critical political and policy battles ahead, we must be certain of our purpose.

We must begin by retaking and resolutely defending the high ground of America’s founding principles.

February 17, 2010″

I would ask that you join me in signing The Mount Vernon Statement as together we reclaim the conservative principles that our nation was founded on.  It is time to dust off the Constitution and start applying it again in the halls of Congress in Washington.  You can read more about The Mount Vernon Statement by going to their website here.

Campaign Garners More National Attention

February 13, 2010 by Crawford for Congress

Today, the monthly blog featured in the Washington Post called The Fix ranked the top twenty congressional races in the country. Our race went from no where to number 10 on the list! Here is a clip from the article:

“Here’s what we know right now: Democrats currently have less open seats but far more vulnerability; eight of the 20 seats on this month’s Line are districts where a Democratic incumbent is retiring while just two are Republican open seats.

The number one ranked race on the Line is the most likely to switch parties in the fall. Disagree with our ratings? You can rank them yourself at the bottom of this post.

…

10. Arkansas’ 1st district (D): Rep. Marion Berry‘s (D) retirement open up this northeastern Arkansas district where President Obama won just 38 percent of the vote in 2008. The two primary fields are still sorting themselves out but the demographics of the seat make it a hard hold for Democrats. (Previous ranking: N/A)

To read the entire post on The Fix, click here.

This is even more indication that the Crawford for Congress Campaign is garnering even more attention across the country!  Rick was the only candidate, from either side of the ticket, who last year said that enough was enough with Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama’s liberal agenda in Washington.  Rick is a man who, as a small business owner and military veteran, has the background and experience to be a true conservative voice in Washington.  Rick was a true conservative before there was ever a vote to nationalize our healthcare, to take over the automotive industry, or saddle future generations with an impossible debt load.

Rick Crawford needs your support so that in November, the people of the First District will have someone who they can trust and know is a true conservative that will be fighting for conservative principles in Washington.

Crawford Receives Third Key Endorsement of Campaign

February 2, 2010 by plethadmin

JONESBORO – First District Congressional candidate, United States Army veteran, and agri-business owner Rick Crawford announced the endorsement today of former D.E.A. Director, D.H.S. head, and three-time United States Congressman Asa Hutchinson.  Hutchinson, who currently resides in northwest Arkansas, is another significant endorsement for the Crawford for Congress Campaign.

“I am certain that Rick Crawford is the person to represent the first congressional district of Arkansas in the House,” said Hutchinson. “Rick is going to be a common sense legislator who understands the farm economy and values of Eastern Arkansas.  I know Rick will work hard to control federal spending, reduce our national debt and promote job growth that will benefit Eastern Arkansas” said Hutchinson.  “I am honored to wholeheartedly endorse Rick because he knows what it takes to put our country on the right track for our children’s future.”

Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in western Arkansas as a U.S. attorney, Hutchinson went on to serve three terms in the House of Representatives before becoming head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in 2001.  Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Hutchinson was tapped to be the head of the Border and Transportation Security Directorate, the largest branch of the Department of Homeland Security.

“I am deeply honored to have the endorsement of Asa Hutchinson,” said Crawford.  “Asa has been a leader in Arkansas during his time as a Congressman and has helped protect our nation as he led both the DEA and DHS.  Asa has been a trusted conservative voice and has fought for Arkansans as he worked to cut taxes, reduce the size of our federal government, and preserve the integrity of our free market economy.”

“This is an unprecedented time in both the state of Arkansas and our country as a whole. Voters are fed up with the elitist decisions being made in the House of Representatives by Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats that have put her into power. Rick represents a core principle by which our nation was founded – that of checks and balances in our government,” discussed Hutchinson.  “Rick has fought for our freedoms while serving in our nation’s military and now will fight for our nation while serving in Congress,” said Hutchinson.

This is the third endorsement this year of an elected official in Arkansas for the Crawford for Congress campaign that includes Governor Mike Huckabee, former Congressman Ed Bethune, and Congressman Asa Hutchinson.

Crawford Recieves Second Key Endorsement for Campaign

January 30, 2010 by plethadmin

JONESBORO – First District Congressional candidate, United States Army veteran, and agri-business owner Rick Crawford today announced the endorsement of First District Native and former US Congressman to the Second Congressional District Ed Bethune today.  Ed, who currently resides in Maryland, becomes yet another key endorsement in the Crawford for Congress Campaign.

“Rick Crawford is going to be a leader in Washington who is going to create jobs by preserving our free market system, help Americans invest in their own future by cutting taxes, and voting against any legislation that will nationalize our economy,” said Bethune.  “Because of this, I am supporting Rick’s campaign fully to become the next Congressman of the First District.”

Bethune was elected to the United States House of Representatives, Second District of Arkansas, in 1978; and was reelected in 1980 and 1982.  He was a member of the Committee on the Budget; Committee on Financial Affairs; and, Committee on Small Business.  He was elected President of Republican class of new Members of Congress in 1978 – a class that included Vice President Dick Cheney, and Speaker Newt Gingrich.  Bethune was the Republican nominee for U. S. Senate for Arkansas in 1984.  Ed has also served as the Chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party from 1986-1988.

Ed has also been recognized with various awards and honors including Conservation and Wilderness Awards, Arkansas Wildlife Federation.  He was also awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award of University of Arkansas School of Law as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Chosen in 1978 to be a member of the Chowder and Marching Club, a small Republican leadership group in the House of Representatives.  Still an active member of the club, which includes most Republican leaders in the House and Senate.  Group meets each Wednesday evening that Congress is in session.

“The liberal agenda in Washington that is being forced on the American people by Nancy Pelosi must be stopped.  The first vote that a Democrat will make if they were to be elected will be for Nancy Pelosi.  I know that the first vote Rick will cast will be for a common sense, conservative approach and not for Nancy Pelosi.  Rick is who we need at this critical time in our nation’s history representing us in Washington,” said Bethune.

This is the second significant endorsement this month of an elected official in Arkansas for the Crawford for Congress campaign with Governor Mike Huckabee endorsing the campaign earlier in January.
